미량의 빛과 다량의 어둠. 새벽녘의 흐리고 성긴 푸른빛은 모든 사물들을 공간의 일부처럼 감싼다. 이 공간의 빛과 어두움의 비율 관계는 정적과 깊이를 생산하며 그 안으로 귀와 시선을 조용히 흡수한다. 그리고 그 어둠의 깊이 속에서 희미한 빛을 머금은 장면들을 더듬거리듯 바라보도록 유도한다. 새벽녘 청색조의 어둠 속에서 조용히 드러나는 폐교회의 공간과 사물들은 오랫동안 방치된 듯 낡고 부서지고 부식되고 변색되고 얼룩져 있다. 구석구석 무르고, 습하고, 연약한 피부를 가진 공간은 곧 허물어져도 이상하지 않을 만큼 위태롭다. 더 이상 이곳에는 신성도, 기적도 감지되지 않는다. 그리고 이 온전치 못한 공간 안에 마찬가지로 온전치 못한 신체를 지닌 환영들이 유령처럼 등장한다.  

 

 이 환영들은 기이하다. 그들은 현실의 물리적 법칙과 무관한 방식으로 존재한다. 그들의 신체는 합성되고 재단된다. <머리 된 자>(2017)를 보면 물구나무 선 인물의 머리 부위를 중심으로 여러 개의 팔과 다리들이 결합하며 몸은 집단화된다. 여기서 몸은 거대한 조형물과도 같은 더 큰 몸의 일부가 될 뿐이다. 이러한 기이한 형태의 신체 합성은 새의 경우에도 발견된다. 두 마리 새의 머리가 하나로 합쳐져 입이라는 기관을 잃은 새는 더 이상 지저귈 수 없다(<비린 지저귐_2>(2016). 다른 장면에서는 특정한 틀 안에 속하기 위해 틀 밖으로 튀어나온 몸의 일부를 떼어내기도 한다(<안에 속한 자>(2016)). 이처럼 그의 그림에 등장하는 기이한 환영들에서 우리는 신체의 합성과 재단을 통해 개별적인 신체의 자유를 제한하는 힘을 감지할 수 있다. 그리고 이 힘의 다른 이름은 아마 폭력일 것이다.

 

 하지만 여기서 암시된 폭력은 자각되거나 감지되지 않는 종류의 폭력이다. 군데군데 깔끔하게 절단된 신체 부위들은 고통을 호소하지 않는다. 훼손이 자각되지 않는다. 그만큼 이 힘의 폭력은 은밀하다. 이들이 자신의 신체에 가해진 훼손과 폭력에 무감할 수 있는 이유는 무엇일까. 충분히 성숙한 판단력이 형성되기 이전의 시기인 유년기부터 이미 누군가는 신자의 자녀라는 이유만으로 교회 집단에 속하게 된다(<자녀 된 이에게>(2017)). 자신의 탄생 이전에 준비된 기독교 서사 속에서 소년은 이미 죄인이다. 본인은 목격한 적 없는 먼 과거, 인간의 죄를 대신해 벌을 받은 예수의 희생에 빚을 진 소년은 어느새 늘 죄책감을 안고 자신의 생각과 행동을 스스로 검열하게 된다(<비린 지저귐_4>(2017)). 자기 검열은 스스로를 향한 일종의 폭력이다. 그렇게 폭력은 내면화된다. 그리고 내면화된 폭력은 더 이상 폭력으로 인식되지 않는다. 오히려 따라 마땅한 무엇이 되어 어느 순간 타인에게 향하기도 한다. 

 

 양손이 묶여 있지 않아 스스로 목을 매단 것으로 보이는 자들을 향해 군중들은 애도 대신 적개심이 담긴 손가락질을 하며 비난과 아유를 쏟아낸다(<일찍 죽임당한 양>(2018)). 절단된 자기 신체의 뒷부분인지도 모르고 그 냄새를 맡는 개를 묘사한 장면은 이 집단에 내면화된 폭력성에 대해 충분히 의심하지 않는 맹목적인 믿음의 행태를 비꼬는 듯 하다. 그림은 교회라는 집단에서 목격되는 폭력성과 맹목성을 거쳐 결국 허망함을 암시하는 장면들에 가닿는다. 자의와 상관없이 세례를 받고 유년기부터 시작된 이 공동체 생활은 지팡이에 몸을 의탁해야 하는 노년기까지 이어진다. 그러나 갈대처럼 얇고 가는 지팡이에 잔뜩 수그러든 노인의 몸을 의지하는 일은 위태로워 보인다(<갈대 같은 지팡이>(2017)). <깊은 눈>(2016)은 자글자글한 눈가 주름이 암시하는 세월만큼 깊지만 텅 비어있다. 

 

 폐교회의 기이한 환영들의 몸을 빌어 작가는 자신이 평생에 걸쳐 몸담아온 개신교의 이면을 내부자의 관점에서 고백한다. 그곳에서 자신은 암묵적이고 은밀한 폭력을, 맹목성을, 그리고 허망함을 경험했노라고. 그런데 그가 고백하는 어조가 독특하다. 그의 어조에는 감정의 동요가 거의 느껴지지 않는다. 이는 아마 진폭이 거의 없는 차분하고 일관된 리듬의 붓질과 채색 때문일 테다. 그의 붓질은 자신이 그리는 것과 어떤 거리를 두고 있는 것처럼 보인다. 그는 말하는 동시에 자신의 이야기를, 그리는 동시에 자신의 그림을, 자신의 경험을 거리를 두고 관조한다. 고백하는 내용은 상대방의 숨을 잠시 멈추게 만들 만큼 기이하고 자극적인데도 불구하고 말이다. 이러한 형식의 강도와 내용의 강도 사이의 대비에서 비롯된 낙차감은 역설적으로 그가 느꼈을 허망함의 깊이를 전달하며 보는 이의 마음 역시 깊이 출렁거리게 만든다.

A Kind of Confession

 A small amount of light and a great deal of darkness. The blurred and sparse blue light of dawn surrounds everything like a part of space. The relationship between light and shade in this space produces static and depth, and quietly absorbs ears and eyes into it. It then induces to grope and stare at the scenes which hold dim light in the thickness of the darkness. The space and objects of the abolished church that revealed quietly in the shade of the bluish dawn are worn, broken, corroded, discolored, and stained, like as they had been neglected for a long time. The room with weak, damp, and delicate skin in all corners seems precarious as if it will be collapsed soon. There is no more divinity or miracles here. Then specters with unwholesome bodies occur ghostly in this impaired space.

 These illusions are bizarre. They exist in a way that is irrelevant to the physical principles of reality. Their bodies are jointed and cut. In A Man Becoming Head(2017), the body is grouped by combining several arms and legs around the head of a hand-held figure. The body only occupies a part of a larger figure like a massive sculpture. This peculiar form of composition is also found in the case of birds. A bird loses its mouth while the heads of the two are joined together can no longer sing (Fishy Screaming_2(2016)). In another scene, a part of the entity is removed out to belong to a particular frame (Insider(2016)). In these mystifying visions of Lee’s paintings, we can depict the power to confine the freedom of individual anatomy with junction and scission of a body. This force also can be called violence.

 However, the violence implied here is something that is not recognized or detected. Parts of the body that are neatly amputated do not appeal pain. The damage is not perceived. On this wise, the ferocity of this dominance is hidden.  Why can they be insensitive to the injury and brutality on their bodies? Someone already becomes a part of the group of a church from one’s childhood, only because he/she is a child of a believer (To the One Who Became a Child(2017)). In the context of Christian epic that is set up before one was born, the boy is already a sinner. The boy who owes the sacrifice of Christ who has punished substitute of human’s sin in the distant past that the boy has never seen, always feels guilty and inspects himself for his thoughts and actions before he knows(Fishy Screaming_4(2017)). Self-censorship is a sort of violence against oneself. Violence becomes internalized. The interiorized brutality is no longer regarded as it is. Instead, it turns out to be something that deserves to be followed, and at some point be directed to others.

 Instead of mourning, the crowd casts criticism and sarcasm at those who appear to be strangling themselves since their hands are not tied (A Sheep Has Killed Early(2018)). The work illustrating a dog sniffing the scent, which may be the back of its severed body, seems to be sarcastic about the blind faith behavior that does not fully doubt the internalized violence within the group. The work finally associates with the scenes, suggesting from ferocity and blindness seen in the group of the church to the vain. This community life, which was baptized regardless of one's character and started from childhood, continues to an old age where one has to rely one's body on a cane. However, it seems precarious to lean the old man’s withered body on a thin cane as a reed (A Reedy Cane(2017)). Deep Eyes(2016) is deep as the wrinkles suggest but hollow.

 By representing the mysterious illusion of the forlorn church, the artist confesses the other side of Protestantism he has spent his entire life from the insider's point of view. It is about implicit and covert violence, blindness, and futility he has experienced. Though, the tone of his confession is distinctive. There is scarcely any emotional agitation in his tone. It may be caused by the calm, consistent rhythm of brushstroke and color with little amplitude. His brushstrokes seem to keep a distance himself from what he paints. While speaking and painting his stories, he contemplates own experiences at a distance. In contrast to the content of confession that is peculiar and provocative enough to make other people stop breathing for a while. A gap resulting from the difference between the intensity of the format and content paradoxically delivers the depth of vain that Lee has felt and trigger a viewer’s mind deeply.
